Partial Dentures Q & A

What is a partial denture?

Partial dentures are custom-made dental appliances that provide false teeth when you’re only missing some of your teeth. You can have partial dentures to replace any of your teeth, from your front teeth to your molars on either the top or bottom jaw. Dr. Johnson provides half or quarter mouth partials to replace up to five teeth.

Partial dentures usually have a flesh-toned base that fits over your gums that holds the false teeth. The device may also have a wire that hooks around your remaining teeth to hold it snugly in place.

Dr. Johnson also provides full dentures if you’re missing all of the teeth on your top or bottom jaw.

What is the process of getting a partial denture?

Dr. Johnson collaborates with a special dental lab that custom-makes partial dentures. During your consultation, one of the talented lab technicians meets with you and Dr. Johnson to learn about your needs, take molds and pictures of your mouth, and plan the manufacture and delivery of your partial dentures.

When your partial denture is ready, you have an appointment with Dr. Johnson to fit the denture. He checks that it fits securely over your gums without rubbing or irritating your soft tissue. Dr. Johnson also ensures that you can close your mouth and bite correctly with your partial denture.

How should I take care of my partial dentures?

Dr. Johnson provides personalized instructions on how to take care of your partial dentures as well as advice on getting used to your dental appliance.

For example, you should always rinse off your denture and clean your gums after you eat. Additionally, at least once a day, you should remove your partial denture to gently brush it with a nonabrasive cleaner and a soft toothbrush.

Always handle your dentures carefully and if it breaks or starts to irritate your gums, make an appointment with Dr. Johnson—don’t try to repair it yourself.

How can I prevent additional tooth loss?

Taking care of your teeth correctly can reduce your risk of tooth loss. Make sure to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day and floss your teeth at least once a day. Also, make sure to attend your routine dental checkups.
